Every time I hear ‘Over the Rainbow’, and there are dozens of versions out there apart from the Judy Garland original, I still get an emotional buzz. For certain it’s not the slightly confused spiritual message, but rather a piece of nostalgia. The film where the song was featured, The Wizard of Oz, was the first one my father showed at the RAF station during the war where he was responsible for entertainment. I can still visualise the rows of airmen, many back from bombing raids, sitting transfixed watching the monochrome storm in Kansas transform into the multicoloured Wonderful Land of Oz. I wonder if they somehow saw a better world after the war was over. Enjoy!
